The heel is the most intricate part to master in a knitted sock. Exploring various types of knitted heels can help you discover your preferred style for hand-knit socks. Short row heels are easier to execute than they seem. They have a neat appearance, offering symmetrical construction suitable for both cuff-down and toe-up socks.

  • Learn to knit the short row heel using shadow-wrap short rows technique.

  • Customization techniques for short row heel will be discussed.

Students must have experience with sock knitting and have made several socks. This is for the person who is interested in learning how to knit an alternate heel only.

We suggest that you knit a small sock cuff using magic loop method or dpns and bring it to the class as a WIP, in order to better understand the heel construction.
Feel free to use your fingering, sport, DK, or WW yarn leftovers to do the pre-work part. Please note that you may not be able to continue and finish this into an actual sock.

Cast on 48 sts using your preferred cast on method and join to work in the round. Work 12 rounds in k1, p1 or k2, p2 ribbing and keep the knitting on the needles.
